This depends on what passport you have. Spain and France are both members of the European Union and are also in the Schengen area. Holders of US and Canadian passports do not need a visa to enter the Schengen Area provided the period of stay in the Schengen Area does not exceed 90 days within a half-year period. If you do not meet these requirements, you should apply for a visa. Also your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your expected date of departure from Spain or France. It is recommended to have 6 months validity on your passport upon entry.

In 2026 all non-EU nationals travelling to the Schengen Area for a short stay will have their pictures and fingerprints taken upon entry and starting the last quarter of 2026, an electronic registration will be required pre-departure to the EU (called ETIAS – European Travel Information and Authorisation System). It will cost 20 euros (about $23) and be valid for three years or until your passport expires. This is a system like the one used by the United States (ESTA), Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia for its foreign visitors.
